Dazzler of the Day: Lionel Messi

At 35 years of age, Lionel Messi was recently referred to as an ‘aging genius’, which in the world of football may be an accurate description. I was sucked into watching the final game of the World Cup, which pitted Argentina against France, and Messi led the charge for Argentina. Apparently the whole world watches this thing, so Suzie and some friends brought me up to speed on the basics of the game (like why the clock ticks up instead of down, why the end time is wishy-washy at best, and why there is no half-time show – all the important stuff a novice might question). I got hooked and was totally invested in the story of Messi – this World Cup win would cap a year and career of wins for him, and would likely be his last big game. They managed to pull it off, so no one would have to cry for Argentina, and Messi earns his first Dazzler of the Day to further celebrate.

Two Guys’ Tradition

Our almost-annual BroSox Adventure is happily upon us, as Skip and I head to Boston for a Red Sox game. I’m not sure who is looking forward to it more, as a couple of weeks ago we met up for some pre-planning sushi and he expressed his excitement over it as the traditional mark for the end of a trying school year. I’m certainly in need of an escape too, so this comes at a good time.

Aside from that, our expectations are different and more relaxed than they were eight years ago when we started this fun tradition. Since then, we’ve grown and evolved and so have our trips. Last year we branched out with a fancy night at the Mandarin Oriental, which I enjoyed a bit more than Skip, and it made for a memorable adventure. This year we are going back to basics, returning to the condo as our home base, and possibly venturing out to the seaport area for something new. Stay tuned for that recap…

Dazzler of the Day: Sean Murphy

You know you’ve made it when your ass goes viral. In Sean Murphy’s case, it was the butt-slap heard around the world, and it neatly earns him this Dazzler of the Day. Murphy plays for the Oakland Athletics, and in a recent game he got hit with a pitch – more specifically, his ass got hit by a pitch – and suddenly that butt was everywhere for any number of reasons. Who doesn’t like a good piece of cake? Let’s play ball.

Dazzler of the Day: Erin Jackson

Olympic speed skater Erin Jackson raced to a gold medal in the 500 meter event, becoming the first US woman to win that medal since Bonnie Blair in 1994 – she’s also the first Black woman to win an individual gold medal in speed skating ever according to the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee. Today Jackson earns one more honor: Dazzler of the Day, for all of the above reasons.

Olympic Spotlight: Lindsey Jacobellis

Check out this math: currently Lindsey Jacobellis has earned almost half of the total gold medals the US has won so far. Jacobellis just won her second gold at Beijing which brings the total US tally to five. Lindsey has made an impressive two-decade career as a snowboard cross-athlete, and these gold medals are amazing for anyone to have earned – that she’s still at the top of her game is nothing short of spectacular. (Let me know when Ice Slipping is an Olympic event – until then I remain a happy non-contender.) Congrats to Lindsey on the double gold accomplishment.

Dazzler of the Day: Sha’Carri Richardson

The last time I remember being this enraptured by the dazzle and pizzazz of an Olympic runner (and their nails) was when Florence Griffith Joyner set the world ablaze several Olympic decades ago. (I may be dating myself, but who better to date?) This stunner is Sha’Carri Richardson, who swiftly earns her first Dazzler of the Day honor for her record-breaking speed and agility in the Olympic trials.

Dazzler of the Day: Carl Nassib

Heralded as the first active NFL Player to come out as gay, Carl Nassib earns his first Dazzler of the Day for that always-courageous act of being true to oneself, especially in a profession that has never felt very embracing of difference. That may be changing, and if this first step will help other football players making similar difficult choices, then so much the better. (But always keep this in mind too.)

Dazzler of the Day: Simone Biles

Shattering history and making a strong play for the GOAT, Simone Biles just won her 7th American all-around title in gymnastics, setting her up for a fierce Olympics run, and easily securing her debut as Dazzler of the Day. Theres something awe-inspiring about seeing an athlete at the height of her power and prowess, stalking the vault, balance beam, pommel horse, and more with the grace and formidable focus that makes her the absolute best at what she does.

Dazzler of the Day: J.D. Martinez

The third Red Sox player in a row to be crowned Dazzler of the Day, this is J.D. Martinez, in honor of our upcoming return to Fenway Park. Martinez is a designated hitter (I’ve never even been a designated driver) and three-time winner of the Silver Slugger Award. He’s currently in the midst of a five-year $110 million contract with the Red Sox.

Dazzler of the Day: Rafael Devers

Joining Xander Bogaerts in a Red Sox run of sparkle, Rafael Devers hits his way to his first Dazzler of the Day crowning. Signed by the Red Sox as a 16-year-old (no idea how that works) Devers was considered to be the best left-handed hitter in the world. No comment on what wondrous things I was getting up to at the age of 16, but it wasn’t a $1.5 million deal. Congrats to Devers on that, and this latest honor.

Dazzler of the Day: Xander Bogaerts

Gearing up for our BroSox Adventure this weekend, this post marks the debut of Xander Bogaerts as Dazzler of the Day, as my pal Skip recommends him as our first pick of the season for such an honor. Bogaerts goes by a few nicknames – ‘X-man’ or ‘Bogie’ (‘Bogey’) – and has been honored with the Silver Slugger Award several times.

Dazzler of the Day: Tom Daley

His Speedo-clad form has graced this blog numerous times in the past, and as the world gears up for the summer Olympics he’s back in the Speedo again, suited up and ready to dive into his first crowning as Dazzler of the Day. This is Tom Daley and he needs no other introduction thanks to posts like this and this and most especially this. He’s been on competitive fire lately, with his diving partner Matty Lee, and the world waits with breathless anticipation for what the pair will bring to the Olympic pool.

Back in Boston, Proper

This year’s return to our annual BroSox Adventure originally looked a little different than previous years. We are, after all, still muddling through a pandemic in which certain idiots are still refusing to get vaccinated, and the rest of us are being forced to carry the responsibility and concern for our fellow human beings. Luckily, New York and Massachusetts are both doing well on those fronts, and the last time I was in Boston they were just opening things up to full capacity, with no masks for those of us who are fully vaccinated. That includes Red Sox games, which changes our original plans for the BroSox Adventure with Skip.

We had planned on simply taking in a game from afar – either at some quiet pub or restaurant, and possibly just in our hotel room at the Mandarin Oriental – but someplace low-key and, frankly, affordable. When they opened up Fenway to full capacity, however, tickets suddenly became available, and Skip managed to scoop some up, enabling us to return to our tradition in all its customary form. As Skip put it, a BroSox Adventure without a trip to baseballs cathedral would somehow ring hollow – especially after being absent for over a year. This feels right, and it adds the finishing touch to a trip that we’ve been hoping to happen for two years.

Dazzler of the Day: Hope Trautwein

What’s even better than a perfect game? A game in which the pitcher is so strikingly perfect that every batter up ends up striking out. Hope Trautwein accomplished such an amazing feat, and for that she earns her first turn as Dazzler of the Day. I can’t imagine throwing a single pitch that makes it over the center of home plate – or reaches home plate for that matter – so this sort of excellence is especially impressive.
