This evening Andy and I will be attending our friend Bob’s Pre-Thanksgiving Holiday Party. It is absolutely one of my favorite parties of the year, mostly because Bob is one of my favorite people in the world. As a whole, gay men are not always the easiest group of people to get along with, at least not in my limited experience. Some of us are catty, some of us are insecure, some of us are overbearing, some of us are judgmental – in others words, we’re like everyone else, but with impossibly higher standards. I am both perpetrator and victim of this cultural climate, throwing shade and dodging shade equally, but in the end I’ve learned to embrace all of the people at the parties I attend, and some of the best, and kindest, are at Bob’s place.
This is, for us, the official kick-off to the holiday season, sneaking in on the night before Thanksgiving and setting the stage for the warmth and coziness of the anticipatory trek to Christmas. Being that I love the anticipation, this is the moment I’m in my element. The rest of the season unwinds before us, a snowy path where the winter is welcome, and enchantment is at hand.
