As the Deputy Director of LGBTQ+ Affairs for Governor Kathy Hochul at NYS Executive Chamber, Chanel Lopez carries a proud mantle of many firsts, something she has been carrying for a decade and a half of activism and advocacy for the transgender and gender-non-conforming community. Prior to her current position, Chanel was the Transgender Communities Liaison for the NYC Commission on Human Rights, which at the time made her the only openly trans women of color working in such a capacity. Today she continues her trailblazing ways and earns this Dazzler of the Day honor for all her efforts.

Pride Center Gala 2022: The Rainbow Age
One week from tonight the Pride Center of the Capital Region will be putting on its annual Pride Gala. This year brings it back in glorious person, celebrating ‘The Rainbow Age: A New Era of Visibility’ and exemplified by its honorees:
Volunteer of the Year: Paige Medina
Rising Star Award: Cafe Euphoria
Philanthropic Partner of the Year: TD Charitable Foundation
Organization of the Year: Copps DiPaola Silverman, PLLC
Harvey Milk Award: Kathy Hochul Administration
This has always been a wonderful event, and serves as one of the big fundraising efforts for the Pride Center. If you can’t attend in person, they are offering the option of purchasing a ticket and donating it to one of their volunteers and/or group attendees. That way a donated ticket will not only support this organization, but also provide the night of a lifetime to an LGBTQ+ community member.
Tickets may be purchased at the following link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2022-pride-center-gala-tickets-430144623147

Dazzler of the Day: Paul Richmond
Far too often, our greatest living artists are under-appreciated and under-celebrated before their work is assessed by the judgment of time, and it’s one of the saddest things we can do to anyone. Giddily bucking that trend is the celebrated and admired work of Paul Richmond, whose commitment to his art is matched only by his commitment to making the world a better and more inclusive and welcoming place. Way back in a time when you could actually make out my abs, Paul once created this witty and whimsical take on a famous tanning ad and was good enough to make me one of his Cheesecake Boys. Since then (and long before to be honest) I’ve been a die-hard fan of his work – and of his relentless quest to turn around all the negativity of the word into something positive.
Today he is named Dazzler of the Day because he is one of our greatest artists at the height of his talent and career, still making his way in a world that doesn’t always appreciate art and social justice – but for those of us who do, Paul is a gift and an inspiration that keeps us going in the dark times. Check out his website for all his upcoming endeavors (and join in some of his drawing workshops – perhaps the best thing about Paul and his work is his willingness to bring everyone along for the ride, encouraging all artists of all abilities to simply enjoy and try out all art forms).

With effervescent charm and beguiling grace, she disarms potential opponents with a relentlessly kind and positive enthusiasm. If this is what it means to find one’s authentic self, it’s a powerful testament to all of us finding our own true way. Dazzler of the Day: Tony Ardolino
Self-professed Italian Jersey boy Tony Ardolino is our reigning Mr. Gay World USA, and was just named runner-up for the international title. If you were as big a fan of the Miss America Pageant as some of us were growing up, this has all the right twists to earn him the Dazzler of the Day. While there’s no literal crown that comes with being a Dazzler, it’s all the honor I can bestow upon someone who is representing our country on the world stage. We need more feel-good moments like this.

Dazzler of the Day: Chris Conde
Body positivity within the LGBTQ+ community can too often feel like an oxymoron, and that’s always infuriated me. Of all people, we should know what it’s like to be unfairly and unjustly ostracized or judged, yet we do that to ourselves on a daily basis, establishing socially-constructed hierarchies among ourselves as soon as we are given the chance. We would do better to celebrate each other and lift our fellow human beings up rather than comparing or judging. Remember, comparison is the thief of joy.
To that greater end, Chris Conde brings a welcome breath of confident and justified self-assurance to our world, boldly and bravely defying the boxes in which society would contain and limit us. Check out his glorious EP ‘Conde Digital’ available here and bombastic lead track ‘Year of the Queer’. We will not be kept silent, and when the music goes this hard, why would anyone want us to be? Conde rightfully earns this Dazzler of the Day for unapologetically being nothing but himself, and sometimes there’s nothing braver than that.

Dazzler of the Day: Mufseen Miah
A staunch and valiant advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, Mufseen Miah also knows how to make a scintillating podcast come to life, as evidenced by his ‘Queer Talk’ series which is currently in its third season. More importantly, he has been giving a face and voice to the Muslim LGBTQ+ community, navigating what can often be a difficult intersectional crux of identity with hopeful and engaging idealism. To be brave and to celebrate one’s authentic self is the primary component of the Dazzler of the Day, and Miah easily earns his first crowning. Visit his website here for a more comprehensive collection of his many accomplishments and projects.

Dazzler of the Day: Lauren Ford
Back when I was managing the Romaine Brooks Gallery at the Capital Pride Center, I met a young volunteer named Lauren Ford who had just started working at the center. She would join us for the 1st Friday art events and we would share stories. A few weeks ago, I was attending the inaugural LGBTQ+ Convening by the Governor’s office, and Lauren was one of the presenters at the session I was in. It was a happy moment seeing someone I met so many years ago doing so well, and I’m honored to name her as the Dazzler of the Day. Here’s a bit more about her:
Lauren Ford is a Licensed Master Social Worker and the External Contracts Training Manager for the Sydney Albert Training and Research Institute (SATRI) within Northern Rivers Family of Services. As a Training Manager, Lauren coordinates, designs, and delivers professional development and continuing education curriculum for nonprofits, schools, healthcare organizations, and government agencies. Lauren pairs her background in psychotherapy and case management with her training in adult learning theory and curriculum design to build interactive courses that reflect evidence-based mental health approaches and techniques. With over a decade of experience as a mental health professional, Lauren has developed a wide and dynamic skillset through experiences working with local community centers, large nonprofits and statewide advocacy organizations. Her areas of expertise include trauma-informed care and resiliency building, verbal de-escalation, affirming care for LGBTQ people and families, and public welfare policy.
Lauren earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Social Work at the University at Albany. In 2012, Lauren joined the Big Brother’s Big Sister’s program and has enjoyed a 10 year long friendship with her “little brother.” She was a 2014 fellow with the Capital District chapter of the New Leaders Council and went on to serve on the chapter’s board in roles such as Selections and Alumni Chair for 6 years. Since 2018, she has also served as a mentor for the Emerging Nonprofit Leadership Accelerator (ENLA) program through the Institute of Nonprofit Leadership Development at the University at Albany. Currently, Lauren lives in the city of Albany with her partner and enjoys going to the movies – especially super hero and horror films, exploring museums and nature, and volunteering as a cake baker for “Jazzy Sun Birthday’s” a program that supports children and families experiencing homelessness served by St. Catherine’s Center for Children.

Dazzler of the Day: Ron Zacchi
Charismatic, gregarious, and commanding on any microphone, Ron Zacchi knows how to get an agenda done while working through it with charm and seemingly-effortless panache. He currently serves as the Director of LGBTQ+ Affairs for Governor Kathy Hochul at the NYS Executive Chamber, where he oversees the state’s LGBTQ+ efforts, and if you’ve been to any of the state’s Pride events this past summer you may have seen him working the mainstage. Prior to his position at the Chamber, he was the Director of External Affairs at the NYS Division of Human Rights. His impressive resume includes his role as Executive Director of Marriage Equality New York, where he played a pivotal role in bringing about the Marriage Equality Act. Since that time, Zacchi has worked on every major piece of LGBTQ+ legislation that has passed in New York State. Earlier this year he was named as part of the City and State NY 2022 Power of Diversity: Pride 100. Tomorrow he will help helm the Fall 2022 LGBTQIA+ Convening in Albany, which will present sessions on LGBTQ+ health and community issues. For now, he earns his first Dazzler of the Day thanks to an accomplished career of social advocacy and serving the state of New York to continually effect positive change.

Dazzler of the Day: Leslie Jordan
He’s been sober for 25 years, and that’s more than enough to merit this Dazzler of the Day, but in addition to that footnote, Leslie Jordan has been entertaining the world for decades. He’s finally come into his own social media prominence, thanks to his surprising success on Instagram – which was no surprise to anyone who’s followed his hilarious antics. Known by many from his turn on ‘Will & Grace’, Jordan has made appearances on about a bazillion shows over the years, thanks to his wit, hilarity and natural charm and charisma.

Dazzler of the Day: Jodyann Morgan
Forging fabulous body positive and gender neutral products sounds like a challenging and exciting quest, and Jodyann Morgan is making a go of it with her ever-expanding selection of handmade candles found at her website here. She earns her first Dazzler of the Day feature because of all the reasons listed in her official bio below (and for those absolutely exquisite candles she creates).
“Jodyann Morgan is a plus size, queer, Black woman who sits at the intersection of race, size, and sexuality. Pride and representation are personal. She creates lovingly hand poured, gender-free candles that allow people to see their bodies, and the bodies of people they love, in accessible art. Morgan started CTOAN on Instagram, but before all of that, she was just a foodie on a mission to document her meals in photos and videos which she continues to indulge in occasionally.”

Dazzler of the Day: Josh Sabarra
Making one’s way in Hollywood can not be an easy road to take, yet Josh Sabarra has done just that, surviving and thriving in the land of broken dreams and defeated aspirations. He’s got the bruises and weariness to show for such a non-stop lifestyle, and he’s got two hilarious novels that have turned even his most difficult passages into biting prose, gleaming like Oscar gold. ‘Porn Again’ is his surprisingly-poignant memoir, while ‘Enemies Closer’ takes aim at the heart of the entertainment world – both crackle with wit and verve. Those qualities find physical fruition in his collection of t-shirts and other merchandise, and if you check out his online offerings here, you’l find a saying for just about every situation in which you might find yourself. Sometimes a quick quip is the singular saving grace that keeps us from going over the edge. In that spirit, Josh Sabarra is our Dazzler of the Day.

Dazzler of the Day: Billy Eichner
Hailed as the first gay romantic comedy from a major studio, ‘BROS’ is set to make history as its star Billy Eichner crests into the Hollywood stratosphere. From ‘Billy on the Street’ to ‘BROS’ Eichner makes a full career trajectory while pushing a gay rom-com into the land of the masses. It’s been a bit of a climb, but Eichner’s exuberant charm and roguish edge finally seem to have found they rightful way into mainstream pop culture, and there’s a giddy glee in realizing that for all of us who have been enamored from the beginning. Here he is as Dazzler of the Day for the first, and likely not the last, time.

Happy Gay Uncles Day!
Yes, this is a real thing, and you have probably forgotten to get me the gifts I so richly deserve, so hurry up and head to my Amazon Wish List to rectify the situation immediately. (My birthday is also coming up, so purchase accordingly.) As for Gay Uncles Day, it’s more of an amusement than anything else – I get enough joy out of seeing my niece and nephews that I don’t need a special day to commemorate my role as Guncle. That said, who am I to deny anyone the chance to send gifts on the second Sunday in August?
Recently, the twins asked whether I ever held them both in my arms at the same time – we were discussing how small Jaxon was and whether they were ever so small. I have several photos of me holding them both, but I think this is one of the last times I was able to physically do so. We won’t be recreating this anytime soon or later, unless I want a broken back.
