Dazzler of the Day: Soledad O’Brien

My adoration for Soledad O’Brien began when she was on CNN in the early 2000’s, at a time when seeing another biracial person on television was both emboldening and refreshing. We haven’t come all that far since then, a point which O’Brien continues to drive home, in necessary and potent form. Many of the problematic news stories today are such because of the way in which they are framed – for ratings or political correctness or plain and simple weakness of people who are afraid to call out injustice and social ills in blunt and accurate terms.

O’Brien consistently challenges reporters, and viewers, to do better, and she can back up her criticism as a veteran in the news field. Unfettered by the restraints and internal machinations of a behemoth like CNN, O’Brien has earned this Dazzler of the Day for her ongoing influence and voice for intelligence, truth, and calling out racism and hate as they are. She continues to make a powerful impact in the news world, helming her own documentary production company that is currently putting out the ‘Disrupt and Dismantle’ series on BET.

Her Twitter feed alone is enough to dazzle and delight (I will always appreciate people in powerful positions taking risks that unabashedly speak out against social injustice, no matter how polarizing or unpopular that may be) and if you ever hear that she’ll be appearing on a news segment somewhere, make that appointment to watch.

Dazzler of the Day: Marcus Lemonis

Venerated and worshipped by my pal Skip, Marcus Lemonis is one of those do-good philanthropists of which this world needs more – and the only way I have of honoring him is by naming him Dazzler of the Day. It’s a small reward for all the good he’s done for others, but hopefully it will be just as good as any bite of chocolate at 2 AM (an inside joke, Skip tells me, that I still don’t quite understand). Lemonis makes an ideal Dazzler because he dabbles so successfully in so many fields, and does it all with true artistry and talent. For further evidence of his brilliance, visit his website here.

Dazzler of the Day: Cyrus McQueen

Hilarious eloquence is not an easy state to attain, but Cyrus McQueen does it with perfect panache, and I’m too excited and in awe of his book ‘Tweeting Truth to Power‘ to wait until I am completely finished with it to name him Dazzler of the Day. I’ve long admired McQueen, thanks to his witty way with social media, and his ability to cut straight to the heart of issues political and personal, and make them into a charged universal clarion call to change. His website gives a more grandly comprehensive view of his many talents, but for the quickest hit of his brilliance, just follow him on Twitter, and then pick up ‘Tweeting Truth to Power‘ because it’s the perfect antidote for the poison of all the years marred by that former fuck-up who shall not be named. (Hint: it was the awful one-term loser who stole the election between such great men as Barack Obama and Joseph Biden.) But don’t take my weak description for it – read McQueen for a much more powerful and cutting take-down of the former guy – it’s exhilarating and profoundly cathartic – the relief and release accompanied by grateful laughter and much-welcome entertainment.

Dazzler of the Day: Stacey Abrams

There is a very good argument to be made for the proclamation that Stacey Abrams single-handedly saved the American Democracy as we know it. Following her questionable defeat in a run for Georgia’s Governor amid infuriating voter suppression, Abrams took it upon herself to work tirelessly in the next election cycles to help fix all that was (and some of which still remains) broken, and we have her to thank in large part for the the recent Senate elections in Georgia going blue. She is a true Dazzler of the Day, for her unwavering belief in our democracy and her inspiring journey of making setbacks and challenges into an opportunity for reform and improvement

Dazzler of the Day: Tom Bertram

How could I not feature someone who proclaims to be “The Biggest Pop Star No One Knows“? That kind of cheeky hubris calls to me from long ago, so my heart is warmed a bit by Tom Bertram, who actually has the musical talent to back up such a bold statement, and is more than worth a few listens. He is our Dazzler of the Day, thanks to gems like ‘Mr. Lucky’. Check out more of his stuff here

Dazzler of the Day: Omar Apollo

Mexican-American singer Omar Apollo released his album ‘Apolonio’ last year, from which the featured song and video below originate. Apollo earns his first Dazzler of the Day honor thanks to his musical prowess – as much as for his blue hair. We love a guy in blue. Visit his website for more fascinating vibes.

Dazzler of the Day: George Takei

If it were based on his Twitter account alone, George Takei would be a lock on Dazzler of the Day; based on his entire amazing career, he earns the title in a way few others have. Takei has been an actor, activist and author for roughly seven decades – an unprecedented run that only seems to be getting stronger as his growing social media acumen finds new ways to inspire.

Dazzler of the Day: Patrick Allen Wood

Anything that started with someone’s job at the circus is going to be a good story, and if it involves underwear and swimwear at the end, so much the better. Such is the magnificent tale of Patrick Allen Wood, our Dazzler of the Day, who began his noble quest with a job at the circus, and ended up crafting something for everyone. Unable to find properly-fitting clothing, he took it upon himself to make his own, resulting in the skills and self-honed talents that eventually translated to his current work creating swimwear and underwear. And what wonderful work it is – fabrics and patterns and styles that are as timeless as they are cutting-edge, Wood crafts garments that are wearable works of art. Best of all, he models them himself – and the best designers are those who walk the runway in their own work. Check out his website here.

Dazzler of the Day: Alex Beresford

The most epic and glorious take-down of the perennially nasty Piers Morgan came this week in the simple declarations of Alex Beresford, which prompted Premiere Snowflake Piers to walk off the set and quit the show. That alone would have been enough to name Alex Beresford as Dazzler of the Day, but underneath the armor of his on-air wardrobe lurks this specimen of fit fantasy, so he’s doing double duty today.

Dazzler of the Day: Kristen Johnston

She was probably the most famous casualty in the entire ‘Sex & the City’ series, and she certainly went out in a memorable way (the cost of a cigarette in those days…) Anyway, Kristen Johnston is named Dazzler of the Day not only for her scene-stealing antics on-screen, but for her courageous and brave recovery from addiction (chronicled in her brilliant memoir ‘Guts: The Endless Follies and Tiny Triumphs of a Giant Disaster’). Check her out in this final season of the hilarious, and often moving, sitcom ‘Mom’ (made all the more exhilarating thanks to Johnston’s surprisingly tender portrayal of Tammy) and then find and follow her magnificent Twitter feed, @thekjohnston.

Dazzler of the Day: Jonathan Tucker

From his dazzling performance in ‘Sleepers’ – a criminally under-appreciated gem from the 90’s that also had indelible performances by Brad Pitt, Jason Patric and Minnie Driver – to his current powerful turn on NBC’s ‘Debris’, Jonathan Tucker has been steadily adding dramatic heft to a career of fascinating roles. His shape-shifting is so good that he’s become one of those actors that disappears into every one of his characters while retaining a mystique that somehow adds to his star-power. While he’s been a Hunk of the Day here previously (twice, actually) he now earns his first Dazzler of the Day honor. Can’t wait to see where his career goes next.

Dazzler of the Day: Margaret Cho

She embodies what the line ‘Ladies with an attitude’ truly means, and Margaret Cho, with an impressive herstory of accomplishments and courage, easily earns this Dazzler of the Day. She continues to wow audiences and the world over with her cutting social commentary and witty delivery, backing it all up with that rarest of Hollywood careers: a long and sustainable one. She’s been trailblazing for decades, and isn’t slowing up anytime soon. Dazzle on, Queen.

Dazzler of the Day: Javier Muñoz

Javier Muñoz was an easy selection as Dazzler of the Day, given his penchant for showstopping, scene-stealing antics in such celebrated shows as ‘In the Heights’ and ‘Hamilton‘ – and his personal triumphs over cancer and HIV give an additional layer of strength and vulnerability to his storied journey. The greatest dazzlers are survivors – on the stage and in their personal lives.

Dazzler of the Day: Tyler Hoechlin

This Man of Steel is winning raves in his current turn as Superman in the most recent re-boot of that ageless superhero. Tyler Hoechlin earns his first Dazzler of the Day after previously stunning with his Hunk of the Day feature. It’s a good Friday when there’s a Hunk who deigns to Dazzle.

Dazzler of the Day: Audra McDonald

The very first time I witnessed the wonder that is Audra McDonald on stage was in the 1995 production of ‘Master Class’. She has been dazzling audiences ever since, hence this long-overdue Dazzler of the Day honor. While the stage of ‘Master Class’ was cluttered with the chewed-up bits of Zoe Caldwell’s scene-devouring, every time McDonald appeared she stole whatever bit of scenery remained with her luminescent star-power and seemingly-super-human talent. I was mesmerized, and my fandom has been burning brightly ever since.

A couple of years later I was lucky enough to see her turn as Sarah in ‘Ragtime’ where she once again rose above an already-impressive ensemble to achieve new heights with that gloriously soaring voice. Since those indelible Tony-winning performances, she’s gone on to win multiple Tony Awards (so many in fact that she holds the record for Tonys given for performances), made memorable impressions on film, and taken up the admirable mantle of activism in helping out all of us who have been marginalized in some way. She continues to dazzle and astound, and she’s one of those people who just makes me feel that the world is a little better than it sometimes seems.
