After being completely enamored of his fragrance, I wasn’t sure Richard Grant could do anything to make me love him more, and then his performance in ‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’ goes and blows that foolish inclination up in a glorious puff of sparkle and pizzazz. As the mentor to a budding drag queen, Grant imbues his character with the world-weary, battle-scarred beauty of an aged performer perhaps slightly past their prime, and just waiting for a second act of inspiration. After a lifetime of secondary, though scene-stealing roles, Grant once again nimbly makes shreds of all surrounding scenery, and in a movie of memorable characters, he accomplishes the impossible by rising to the challenge of standing out. For all that, and a few decades of memorable roles (hello ‘Gosford Park’ and ‘The Age of Innocence’), Richard earns this Dazzler of the Day.

Dazzler of the Day: Max Harwood
My newest obsession is the movie version of the West End musical ‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’ – thanks in no small part to the winning performance of Max Harwood as the title character. With a blond mop and big eyes that take in the world as if it were made expressly for him, Harwood gives Jamie the untapped power and budding invincibility of a drag queen being born. Coupled with a poignant vulnerability, and a heartbreaking emotional journey, Harwood takes Jamie through the drama of being a teenager discovering their place in the world, and carving it out when it doesn’t quite fit. For this performance alone, Harwood earns the Dazzler of the Day.

Dazzler of the Day: Sander Jennings
“Never underestimate the power of your story. Everyone has a different story and is living different experiences. Although no one’s life is alike, many of our triumphs, failures, hardships, and successes overlap. For that reason, I believe all of our experiences are important and can impact others. Recently I have been very focused on empowering and helping others share their story. I’ve learned that being a storyteller is sometimes about assisting other people in telling their stories. This realization has driven my work and leads me to want to help others feel empowered and recognize their importance. If you are someone who wants to share their story, go for it – you might be able to impact the lives of so many. If you need some guidance or potentially would like to have your story amplified on my page, feel free to dm the word “guide,” and I’ll try to help you out.” ~ Sander Jennings
From Sander: This is important for everyone to know. To this day, I constantly get asked questions surrounding sexuality, so here are my thoughts:#1. You don’t have to identify as LGBTQ+ to support the LGBTQ+ community. Allyship saves lives and can help create diversity, equity, and inclusion in society.#2. To people who identify as a man and an ally: Don’t let other people questioning your masculinity or sexuality deter you from being an active ally to the LGBTQ+ community. Being an ally doesn’t make you less of a man.#3. To everyone: Just because someone promotes pride and advocates for the community doesn’t mean you should jump to conclusions about their gender identity or sexual orientation.#4. It is best never to ask someone about their sexuality. Create a safe space for someone to share that with you.#5. People questioning you doesn’t need to make you question yourself. Be proud to be you.Final thoughts: One of my main goals on social media is to bridge the gap between allies and the LGBTQ+ community. Some of my content is intended to amplify, uplift, and show support to the LGBTQ+ community. Other posts are designed to educate and encourage my cisgender & heterosexual followers to recognize the importance of Allyship. Whether you identify as LGBTQ+ or don’t, we are all valid and can promote diversity, equity and inclusion together. I love you all.Follow my Instagram and Tiktok to learn more:

Dazzler of the Day: Marin Hinkle
Picking up from the previously-named contingent of marvelousness that is Rachel Brosnahan and LeRoy McClain, this Dazzler of the Day is noted for her performance as Rose Weissman in ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’. In many ways she is my favorite character, probably because I feel she is the most like me, in every failing and character foible. Her intent is never wrong or ill, and she retains a nobility and grace and elegance in the face of the world around her crumbling apart, and I admire that too. On some level she realizes she is less than perfect, but her belief in everything she does imbues even her mistakes with a sense of poise and refinement. Hinkle has a history of impeccably embodying real, complex and often hilariously-comedic characters, such as in her work on ‘Once and Again’ and ‘Two and a Half Men’. As the mother to Mrs. Maisel, she’s at the top of her game.

Dazzler of the Day: LeRoy McClain
My love and adoration for ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel‘ was emboldened by LeRoy McClain and his star-turn as the charismatic Shy Baldwin. For that alone, he easily earns this Dazzler of the Day honor, but that’s far from his only accomplishment. A graduate of the Yale School of Drama, McClain has appeared in ‘The Adjustment Bureau’, ‘The Happy Sad’, and ‘Respect’ – while also treading the boards across the world. He will be part of the upcoming ‘Sex and City’ re-boot as well, sure to cement his star status on a whole other level.

Dazzler of the Day: Sean Doherty
Actor, singer and songwriter Sean Doherty is more than a triple threat – his talents reach into the multitudes well beyond the number three, and his latest exercise in catchy ear candy is the delicious ‘boys in the backseat’. Today he earns the Dazzler of the Day for all the promise and excitement that his career looks to hold. Check out his intoxicating website here for further details.

Dazzler of the Day: Robert Scott Wilson
He paved the way for the male models on ‘The Price is Right’ and for that reason alone Robert Scott Wilson more than justifies his selection as Dazzler of the Day. Add his popular work on ‘Days of Our Lives‘ and you have a daytime double-header that just might bring me back to Salem after all these years. It’s been way too long since we’ve had a male model as Dazzler of the Day, so let’s make a concerted effort to return to such frivolous innocence.

Dazzler of the Day: Rachel Brosnahan
My latest obsession is ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ on Amazon Prime Video, and the magnificence that is Rachel Brosnahan as the title character is what propels this show into greatness. From her very first brisket, she has been inspiring me on days when I feel down, and, even better, on days when I don’t feel particularly anything, especially like getting up. Credit Brosnahan’s deft portrayal of all Mrs. Maisel’s faults and foibles and fabulousness laid out in all their emotional complexity, and she niftily earns this Dazzler of the Day honor. The indefatigable and indomitable spirit, the sheer force of her life-energy, and all those exquisite outfits to lift the most downtrodden, have collectively raised my outlook on this otherwise-bleak world. Todah rabah rabah!!!

Dazzler of the Day: Harry Styles
Some consider Harry Styles the heir to Mick Jagger’s throne, and some think he’s gone beyond that into a stratosphere of new rock-pop superstardom. His latest album is an exercise in musical genius, and his live performances are spectacular, designed with the wisdom of letting his unbridled charisma and star-power shine through. Sparkling fringe vests and rainbow flags are just cherries on this Dazzler of the Day – and I love anyone who lives up to their name.

Dazzler of the Day: Lisa Whelchel
Like any proper gay boy growing up in the 1980’s, my idols were Madonna, Blanche Devereaux, and Blair Warner. Fittingly our final honors of ‘The Facts of Life‘s fabulous foursome goes to the woman who portrayed my favorite fact-of-lifer Blair Warner: Lisa Whelchel. She earns the Dazzler of the Day for turning what could have been a one-note stereotypical character of privilege into a complex and conflicted heroine, whose friendship with Jo proved to be the heart of the entire show.

Dazzler of the Day: Nancy McKeon
Sometimes all it takes for a television show to move from a pleasant enough diversion to classic sitcom status is the right character played by the right actress. Such was the magical alchemy that happened when Nancy McKeon joined the cast of ‘The Facts of Life’ as Jo Polniaczek and immediately started sparring with blonde centerpiece Blair Warner. After whittling the cast down to its star quartet, the show found its footing, thanks to the gruff girl from the wrong side of the tracks with a broken heart of gold. Bringing a depth of feeling and emotional complexity to Jo, McKeon – and the chemistry she shared with her co-stars – put ‘The Facts of Life’ on the sitcom history map. She channeled her talents throughout her lengthy career in Hollywood, including a memorable stint on ‘The Division’ and multiple television movies. For most of us, it’s her indelible role as Jo that made the most lasting impression, and so she earns this Dazzler of the Day for giving her heart and spunky grit to all of us in the 80’s.

Dazzler of the Day: Mindy Cohn
Lest anyone forget, before George Clooney kissed Julianna Margulies and Jennifer Lopez, he kissed Mindy Cohn at the end of an episode of ‘The Facts of Life’. More people need to be aware of that, and so Mindy gets this Dazzler of the Day honor, thanks also to her tireless work as an LGBTQ+ ally, as well as a steady stream of film and television work since her days as Natalie on ‘The Facts of Life’. She also makes appearances with the Beekman Boys from time to time, because she has great taste.

Dazzler of the Day: Kim Fields
Fresh from this re-immersion into ‘The Facts of Life’ I was led to the fabulous Kim Fields for our current Dazzler of the Day. With three indelible and unforgettable roles to date (for her work on ‘The Facts of Life’, ‘Living Single’ and ‘The Upshaws’) Fields also did a quick stint on the Real Housewives, but wisely kept it to a single season. For many of us she will always and affectionately be remembered as Tootie, where for nine seasons she honed and sharpened her comedic acting skills, preparing her for a long career in Hollywood.

Dazzler of the Day: Michael Damian
It was on a recent rerun of ‘The Facts of Life’ (a comfort from my childhood) where I was reminded of the 80’s magnificence of Michael Damian, and re-familiarizing myself with where ‘Flyman’ went on his career trajectory offered reason enough for Damian to earn his first Dazzler of the Day. Surviving in the business of show is no easy feat, and that he’s still producing and acting and directing is evidence of a certain sort of brilliance.

Dazzler of the Day: Shawn Gillie
Nobody knows how to hustle as well as Shawn Gillie, and for all that relentless work ethic, as well as his hard-won notoriety in the Capital Region, he gets crowned as Dazzler of the Day, which I’m sure he’ll poke fun at, but which I intend with the most genuine of appreciation and earnest gratitude for all that he’s done for the community over the years. A man of many hats, and countless career endeavors (DJ, comedian, owner and founder of Gillie’s Getaways – see his website here), he dazzles with a hilarious wit, and has mastered the truly talented comedian’s hat-trick of turning his own personal heartaches into a story of survival, making everyone around him feel good even when he himself isn’t always feeling it. There’s a nobility in bringing that kind of joy to other people. There’s also something profoundly generous about him, which was apparent as I searched his FaceBook profile for photos – in almost all of them he was there with other people – a testament to his genuine attachment to and love of others. He can wisecrack his way out of it, but at the heart of everything he does is a desire to connect and make other people happy – and that’s more dazzling than just about anything else.
