Dazzler of the Day: Justin Tranter

Activist, songwriter, and all-around-fabulous-human-being Justin Tranter earns their first Dazzler of the Day honor, thanks in part to the upcoming musical ‘WILD: A Musical Becoming‘ which will feature director Diane Paulus and theater icon Idina Menzel. I’m looking forward to that as perhaps the first venture back into the sacred land of live performance. As for Tranter, enchanting audiences is nothing new for such a dazzling delight, and neither is doing good and meaningful work for organizations like GLAAD

Dazzler of the Day: Lisa S. Lee

It’s a rare treat when the Dazzler of the Day is also a family friend, so this post warms my heart a bit more than most as it honors an artist I not only respect but count as a part of the family. This is Lisa S. Lee, an author, speaker, entrepreneur, brand and innovation strategist, and Champion of Creators. She is the partner of Suzie’s brother Andy, and they live in Portland, OR with their daughter Ella. Check out Lisa’s website here for further evidence of her brilliance. Since her skills as a writer vastly outshine mine, here is part of her story in her own words:

Once upon a time, I was a corporate marketing gal living in NYC. Now, I’m a Portland writer, speaker, branding educator and entrepreneur. I traded in my black high heel pumps for a pair of teal Hunter rain boots.

I’ve spent a lot time soul searching, trying to find the deepest expression of who I am, the creative spirit I was meant to be. I hope, through my writing, that I can impart some of the wisdom I’ve learned along the way.

My Story

At age 35, I lived ‘work hard, have fun’ lifestyle in one of the most dynamic cities in the world – New York City. I kept constantly busy, eating in fancy restaurants, going to shows and parties, and dating – a lot. I had a six figure job with a great title and an interesting career in branding and innovation. I had just bought my first adorable yet spacious 1-bedroom apartment, Once a year I traveled to a far off place – Brazil, South Africa, Italy. It seemed as if I had it all.

But in reality, it all felt a bit empty. Something in my life was missing, but I wasn’t sure what it was.

After a particularly intense work period, I went on a vacation to a yoga ashram where I woke up at 5 a.m. every day to meditate. I did yoga several times a day and ate vegetarian food twice a day (and didn’t starve as I thought I would).

That’s where I realized that I was living A dream life – but it just wasn’t MY dream life. I was going through the motions, chasing the idea of what I thought a fulfilling life was. Yes, some of those things were extremely enjoyable. I am a foodie at heart. I love traveling. Even though I was stressed all the time, I actually really liked my job.

My life was filled with wonderful things on the outside, but I didn’t have the richness of insight on the inside. I thought all this stuff – a great job, a great apartment, a great lifestyle – would make me happy. But I wasn’t happy inside. I didn’t know what my authentic self wanted or needed. I was yearning to know myself.

That’s when it dawned on me. I needed to get off the hamster wheel. I had to do it in an extreme way, or else I’d chicken out and never do it. I went to work after my vacation and quit my job.

I quit my job to get to know myself. To go within. To do some soul searching. To follow my bliss.

I have done the deep work into knowing myself and discovering my own authentic self. I have crafted the life I’ve yearned to have – to live MY best life, not someone else’s. I have made creativity a daily practice.  I hope to inspire other women to do the same. If you’d like a little bit of that inspiration, sign up for my e-mail list where I’ll share some of the insights I’ve learned about going within.

Dazzler of the Day: Subrina Dhammi

Evening anchor Subrina Dhammi has seen various Hunks of the Day to her left and to her right over the years, and now it’s her turn to step into the Dazzler of the Day for her studied poise and pizzazz on Channel 13, WNYT. When she’s not anchored to the news desk, she’s running or dancing or spending family time with her husband and daughter.

Dazzler of the Day: Dr. Joseph Abramo

With more advanced degrees than I can count, Dr. Joseph Abramo is an Associate Professor of Music Education at the University of Connecticut, and while such an impressive body of education is more than enough to merit the Dazzler of the Day, it’s his personal side that truly puts him into Dazzler territory. While he was originally just the younger guy who swooped in and married my high school sweetheart, he’s since grown into a friend in his own right, and I’ve known him for longer than I’ve known my own husband. In that time, I’ve been lucky and privileged enough to work with him on some Halloween songs – with a new one directly on the way later today – and in that process I got to glimpse the genius and musical talents that solidify his Dazzler status

Dazzler of the Day: Laverne Cox

It was her scene-stealing performance in ‘Promising Young Woman’ that turned me into a Laverne Cox fan, and resulted in this Dazzler of the Day feature. She’s been carving an unprecedented career in Hollywood, from her star-making contribution in ‘Orange is the New Black’ to her too-long-to-mention lists of firsts as a transgender trailblazer.

Dazzler of the Day: Shangela

Shangela stormed onto RuPaul’s Drag Race in one of the early seasons I happened to watch, and left all too early, only to be brought back. And brought back again. And again, until she conquered with her indefatigable spirit and refusal to be anything but a survivor. Such resilience and defiance, coupled with the tenacious spirit to get back up after every fall and carry on, is why she earns this Dazzler of the Day honor. Nowadays she is starring in the powerful and poignant ‘We’re Here’ on HBO, empowering others to join in her journey, and branching off to things like her very own Shanitizer product in these dangerous days.

Dazzler of the Day: Madonna

She recently said that the most controversial thing she has ever done has been to simply stick around, and when you read any commentary on her from the past five years you’d be hard-pressed to argue against that. The vitriol and hate from an ageist stance is ridiculously plain to see. It’s rather infuriating as well, considering all that Madonna has accomplished. Why we are not celebrating this woman who is still an icon among the living is a complete mystery to me. And so we have this rather trite and cliched homage to her, as if being named Dazzler of the Day could ever capture what she has meant in my life, and in the lives of so many others. Still, let’s make it official, let’s make it formal, and let’s christen her as the Dazzler she’s been for four decades strong – and let’s do it by revisiting the seminal thing she does: making and mastering the perfect pop song. If you’ve ever enjoyed one of her masterpieces, you know the ultimate joy there is to be found in her music. See the following: Like A Prayer, Vogue, Express Yourself, Crazy For You, Deeper and Deeper, Live to Tell, Music, Rebel Heart, Like A Virgin, The Power of Goodbye, Papa Don’t Preach, Sooner or Later, Don’t Tell Me, Hung Up4 Minutes, Dress You Up, Rain, La Isla Bonita, Nothing Fails, Crave, Give it 2 Me, Ray of Light, Spotlight, You Must Love Me, Into the Groove, Open Your Heart, Frozen, You’ll See, True Blue, Secret, Material Girl, Cherish, Justify My Love, I Want You, I’ll Remember, Celebration, Masterpiece, Ghosttown, Dark Ballet, Lucky Star, Where’s the Party, Secret Garden, Survival, Take A Bow, Impressive Instant, Drowned World: Substitute for Love, Who’s That Girl… and the list goes on…

Dazzler of the Day: Andy VanWagenen

We continue our celebration of Andy’s birthday with this post, featuring Andy VanWagenen as our Dazzler of the Day. Having already waxed rhapsodic about his attributes and magnificence here, I’m going to allow these handsome pictorial reminders of the past speak for why he has been a Dazzler in my life for over twenty years. PS – Don’t forget to wish him Happy Birthday today!

Dazzler of the Day: Lynda Carter

Like any good gay person growing up in the 709’s and 80’s, I had a rather fanatical obsession with Wonder Woman, as evidenced here. From her outfit to her no-nonsense power and intelligence, she was everything I was not, but most wanted to be. Embodied brilliantly by the insanely talented Lynda Carter, Wonder Woman became my idol. I studied both character and actress for hints and help in how to be so effortlessly and beautifully in command. For a little gay boy who saw no role models for the two-sided torment he felt inside, Wonder Woman represented a rare possibility of living a life not dictated by society. Cut to this week, when Lynda Carter tweeted her support of those coming out, and those who can’t quite yet, for National Coming Out Day. Looks like she’s still a hero and inspiration to me and so many others. She also has a new album out now, and if you haven’t heard her magnificent voice you are in for a treat when you check it out. The very least I can do is name her the Dazzler of the Day

Dazzler of the Day: Chris Meloni

We love a hot zaddy in these parts, so it’s well past time that Chris Meloni was honored with this Dazzler of the Day feature. Meloni has been a Hunk of the Day here in the past, offering a better glimpse of his assets, but since that feature was updated, it’s time he’s been officially named Dazzler. He’s been especially happy to engage with and encourage his growing contingent of gay fans, happy to acknowledge where some of his bread is buttered. The shots seen here are from a recent Men’s Health cover story, because Meloni is clearly the epitome of heathy and hotness. His Twitter feed is also evidence how how to be a celebrity and remain true to who you are as a person, while promoting equality and justice.

Dazzler of the Day: Tabitha Brown

Meet the woman who introduced me to TikTok, and whose presence is the only reason I’m on there anymore, or any social media for the most part, as I find myself exhausted and disappointed by the awfulness of it all. This is Tabitha Brown, whose indefatigable energy and glorious energy is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise-troubling online world. Brown exudes a spirit of peace and tranquility, of healthy living, and of unbridled optimism. Her new book ‘Feeding the Soul (Because It’s My Business)’ is a beautiful encapsulation of her mantras and way of life, and is an inspiration for those of us in need of a little lift. She is our Dazzler of the Day for all these reasons and more. See her website here for further evidence of her magnificence.

Dazzler of the Day: Jillian Bell

One of my guilty holiday movie pleasures is ‘Office Christmas Party’ with Jason Bateman and Jennifer Aniston. It’s also got some scene-stealing antics by Kate McKinnon, so to even make an impression amidst this requires a comedic skill only Jillian Bell could conquer, and her turn as a pimp in this is easily my favorite part of the whole hilarious escapade. While that put her on my map, it was her revelatory performance in ‘Brittany Runs a Marathon’ that cements her as an actress with dramatic and comedic skills. For those two works alone she earns this Dazzler of the Day.

Dazzler of the Day: David Pevsner

This rather naked day on the blog feels especially fitting for the Dazzler of the Day, David Pevsner, who earns his first crowning thanks to a decades-long show-business career, as chronicled thrillingly by his book ‘Damn Shame: A Memoir of Desire, Defiance, and Show Tunes’ – which just about says it all. With another penchant for modeling in the buff, Pevsner appeals to the spectacular space where art and beauty and the human body collide. A Renaissance man in the truest senses of the term, Pevsner has just about done it all – and all of it pretty magnificently.

Dazzler of the Day: Shiloh Fernandez

This Dazzler of the Day goes out to my friend Josie, who recommended Shiloh Fernandez as the Dazzler/Hunk that this website has needed. He’s been seen in a wildly varied collection of work so far – from the television series ‘Jericho’ and ‘United States of Tara’ to the films ‘Deadgirl’, ‘Red Riding Hood’, and ‘The Birthday Cake’. No doubt more magic is on the way from that sultry stare.
