Dazzler of the Day: Paul Tonko

My first memory of Congressman Paul Tonko was of his family home’s Christmas lights during the holiday season. When the trees behind our house had shed their leaves for the winter, we could just barely make out the glow of that display, and we always made a point of driving by several times during the season. That glow merely hinted at the warmth and affection he has shown to our hometown of Amsterdam, and it grew into a lifetime of service in which he has consistently and unrelentingly championed the well-being of all his neighbors and constituents.

One of the greatest things about Congressman Tonko is that he shows up – and not everyone does that these days. He’s there for all the events that a Congressman should be at – engaging and talking and sharing – and he’s there for all the minor moments that don’t get the airplay, but remain important to the people he represents. That points to a heart of service greater than himself: for Congressman Tonko, it’s always been about the people, and making the world better for all of us. For that reason alone, he is our Dazzler of the Day.

Check out his website here for more of his accomplishments, and join me in supporting his campaign this year. He’s also on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram

Dazzler of the Day: Pati Jinich

She is one of my favorite chefs, and that might come down to a single, simple, epic recipe: the Señor Breakfast Sandwich. It’s become a staple on weekends when breakfast/brunch is the most important thing happening. Pati Jinich has a number of epic recipes, many of which I’ve tried – and all have been happy successes (which can’t be said for some of my kitchen endeavors). As host of ‘Pati’s Mexican Table’ she offers a glimpse of a multi-cultural world that enriches the brain-numbing drivel on every other television channel. Today she earns the Dazzler of the Day because her personality and spirit are as inspiring as her recipes – she just makes everyone feel a little happier. We need that more than ever. Check out her website, and more foolproof recipes, here.

Dazzler of the Day: Dominick Purnomo

Today one of our favorite restaurants in the world, dp: An American Brasserie, celebrates its 16th birthday. In honor of that, and all of his contributions to the community, owner Dominick Purnomo easily earns this Dazzler of the Day. From his impeccable attire to his mastery of every single detail of hospitality, Purnomo has cut a winning stride through the Capital Region. A true gentleman, his philanthropic work and community service prove he is more than his exquisite boutonniere (check out the Feed Albany organization he began shortly after COVID hit). For an elegant yet relaxed dining experience in downtown Albany, visit his restaurant, dp: An American Brasserie. He promises more great things to come in their 17th year, and we’ll be reserving a table soon.

Dazzler of the Day: Nathaniel Gray

Once upon a New York State Agency meeting, I had the privilege of sitting across the room from Nathaniel Gray (he/him), who wowed with his impressive energy and ideas (and hair) at a gathering of the NYS LGBTQ+ Interagency Task Force, on which he was working as part of the Governor’s Pride Outreach team. Since then, he’s been named as the Executive Director of the Pride Center of the Capital Region, and today earns his first Dazzler of the Day. On March 31, he’ll be the proverbial ice sculpture around which a ‘Meet the Executive Director’ event unfolds at the Franklin Terrace Ballroom in Troy, NY – get your tickets here. He recently expressed his hopes and plans for his new role:

“My plans are to establish a solid foundation and resources for the Pride Center that is diverse and provides long term opportunities. I also hope to establish relationships with local businesses and organizations to provide training and consultation on LGBTQ+ cultural awareness and policies; to support schools in creating safe environments for all youth, and to engage community leadership in a dialogue about making the entire Capital Region a safe and affirming environment for LGBTQ+ folks of every age and race; LGBTQ+ Visibility Saves Lives.
I am looking forward to meeting many of you at my first community forum and hear from our region’s LGBTQ+ community.”

Dazzler of the Day: Kira

My favorite Dazzlers of the Day are those whom I know personally. This happy selection is one such Dazzler, as my friend Kira snatches her crown in anticipation of an upcoming Boston weekend post. Kira and I have been friends since our days at John Hancock in the late 90’s, making a friendship that’s sustained for over two decades. We’ve learned to enjoy each other’s company as it is, work on our friendship with its ebbs and flows, and been there for each other as a comfort when the rest of the world descends into madness.

Dazzler of the Day: Ariana DeBose

Stage, screen and television star Ariana DeBose recently won a Screen Actor’s Guild award, setting the stage for further Oscar gold thanks to her turn in ‘West Side Story’. After turns in ‘Hamilton‘ and ‘The Prom‘ she proves her status as a triple threat, and now she can add Dazzler of the Day to all that glory.

Dazzler of the Day: Wilson Cruz

It was the mid-90’s, and in the midst of the tattered-flannel grunge muck I was just starting to acknowledge my sexuality. Flickering boldly across the television screen was the audaciously and unapologetically queer character of Rickie Vasquez on ‘My So-Called Life’. He was astonishing to me – so supremely confident, yet so heartbreakingly vulnerable – and the portrayal of such a person by the exquisitely talented Wilson Cruz suddenly made me realize that there might be a place in the world for other queer kids like myself. In the ensuing years, I came out and began to find my way in the world, forever thankful to Cruz for showing me another way, while Cruz forged his own journey in Hollywood, crafting a career in defiance of the typical entertainment rules for openly gay people of color. His trailblazing continues to this day, as evidenced by his current turn on ‘Star Trek: Discovery’, boldly going where no one has gone before as he shares an on-screen kiss with his on-screen husband. That’s courage. That’s bravery. That’s even more than a Dazzler of the Day

Dazzler of the Day: Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Every now and then this silly Dazzler of the Day feature highlights someone of supreme import and beloved admiration, and things turn slightly more serious. Today that honor belongs to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine, so valiantly fighting to hold onto his country’s democracy in the face of advancing autocracy and the unwarranted and unprovoked attacks by Russia and Putin. Zelenskyy has rallied his people, and summoned the support of the entire world against Russia’s awful aggression. He has galvanized his citizens, defiantly turning down offers from other countries when they asked if he wanted to leave his own: “I need ammunition, not a ride.” It’s a powerful moment, an impressive lesson, and plants the seeds of a memorable legacy, even if he said early on that such glory is not the purpose of his serving as President. Today, Zelenskyy is named Dazzler of the Day, because it’s the only little thing I can do from this dismal point of helplessness.

PS – He was also a winner on Ukraine’s ‘Dancing with the Stars’. Look it up.

Dazzler of the Day: Jesse Palmer

He got his entertainment boom as a contestant on ‘The Bachelor’ and this year Jesse Palmer returns to that space as host of the television show. While I’m happy to have missed out on all incarnations of that American viewing experience, I’m equally happy to have witnessed Palmer’s charming hosting duties on several cooking championship shows on the Food Network. All of the above is reason enough for his first crowning as Dazzler of the Day. A host with the most, indeed.

Dazzler of the Day: An Unidentified Ukrainian Woman

The sunflower is the national flower of Ukraine. Sunflowers are also one of their biggest crops and exports. The seeds and their oil comprise a huge chunk of the world’s supply. The sunflower represents hope and warmth – the embodiment of the sun after which they are named. When I heard of this story of a Ukrainian woman boldly admonishing a Russian soldier who had invaded her country, my heart broke. She put her own life at risk, bravely speaking her mind about the Russian occupation, and powerfully condemning his presence, insisting he put sunflower seeds in his pockets for when he died on Ukrainian soil. A chilling comment on what is happening now.

I hope she is safe.

Dazzler of the Day: Ryan Eggold

Actors who learn enough about their craft, and the jobs of those around them, often end up directing, which is precisely what Ryan Eggold has recently done on ‘New Amsterdam’. His acting and directorial efforts earn him this Dazzler of the Day.

Dazzler of the Day: Christine Baranski

My obsession with ‘The Gilded Age‘ rages on with this Dazzler of the Day, which finally features the magnificent Christine Baranski – a true dazzler and Broadway baby with the rare trait of having absolutely stolen every single scene she’s ever appeared in, from the side-kick-who-should-have-had-her-own-series in ‘Cybill’ to her luscious turn as a no-nonsense doyenne in HBO’s ‘The Gilded Age’. And her talent to so gorgeously devour scenery is not from lackluster company – she’s provided luminescent turns while appearing opposite Robin Williams and Nathan Lane in ‘The Birdcage’ to harmonizing with Meryl Streep and Julie Walters in ‘Mamma Mia’. Her scenes with Cynthia Nixon in ‘The Gilded Age’ crackle with the nerve and verve of an actress at the top of her game.

Dazzler of the Day: Claybourne Elder

While this heartwarming story may have galvanized the universe to merit this Dazzler of the Day honor for him, Claybourne Elder has been dazzling the world for years. It’s all culminating with the one-two entertainment knockout he’s executing right now as he navigates the sparkling world of HBO’s ‘The Gilded Age’ at the same time he’s treading the boards in ‘Company’. Add this Dazzler of the Day crowning to it and he’s got a legendary triumvirate in magical motion.

Dazzler of the Day: Zendaya

The accolades from her performance in the HBO series ‘Euphoria’ get louder and louder every week – though to be honest I have not yet been able to bring myself to watch the show based on what is said to be regularly-triggering topics and depictions, and it’s all I can do to handle the damn Olympics right now – but I am certain Zendaya is entirely worthy of the praise. Given her previous winning turns in everything from ‘The Greatest Showman’ to ‘Dune’, it seems she can do no wrong. And her red carpet style is nothing short of stunning – hence this Dazzler of the Day honor.

Dazzler of the Day: Aneesa Waheed

Those who understand the magical alchemy between good food and good company inherently know how to dazzle just about everyone. As such, Aneesa Waheed is named Dazzler of the Day for her inspired enthusiasm for sharing good food with the world. She’s opened three local establishments of her creation, Tara Kitchen, and I was fortunate to finally have dinner with some dear friends at the Troy location. The website for her culinary creations can be found here, and is worth several deep dives – the blog alone offers videos and recipes for some amazing dishes. While there, you can also delve into Waheed’s marvelous story of how she came to craft such delicious Moroccan-inspired fare, with elements of all of her world-wide journeys adding delectable accents and unexpected delights to the global comfort food forming the basis of her menus. And speaking of those menus – they are worth a slow and teasing read-through before your visit, when you can request a detailed explanation of your favorites. We have just begun our Tara Kitchen journey, and I can’t wait to visit again.

(Be sure to scroll down to her video recipe of chicken with preserved lemons and olives, a dish I just made, and it was simply insane.)
