Dazzler of the Day: Sam Smith

Non-binary pop superstar Sam Smith (recently of the #1 smash ‘Unholy’) has been a lightning rod for pop culture notoriety, with talk disparaging their looks, gender, weight, and all sorts of things other than their music. All of that is distracting nonsense which says much more about the people talking than it does about Smith, who has been riding high over all of it, gleefully and rightfully flaunting their beautiful body in sequins, ruffles, pantsuits, and feathers – and I am here for all of it.

Check out the jaw-dropping excess of their latest single ‘I’m Not Here to Make Friends’ which simply fills every floor with the drool of the thirsty and the panting the entire world over; an absolutely mandatory exercise in modern-day fabulosity, it must be seen to be studied and adored, and I’m happy to report that even at this late stage of my game, I was completely floored. This is the stuff of artistic legend and pop legacy. It’s also why Sam Smith is winningly crowned Dazzler of the Day, for what is likely not the last time.

Dazzler of the Day: Matt Friend

Fresh off a riotous appearance on Ari Melber’s show, Matt Friend is crowned Dazzler of the Day thanks to a prolific roster of spot-on hilarious impersonations of celebrities and politicians (or both when they so disastrously meet). He’s made a notable name for himself on Tik Tok, and appears poised on the brink of breaking through just about everywhere else. Check out his website here, and the brief bio culled from there below.

Matthew Friend is an old soul living inside a 23-year-old impressionist’s body. Matthew graduated from NYU’s Gallatin School in 2020, but his love of comedy and entertainment was sparked when he was four years old. He had watched Austin Powers (yes, as a four-year-old) and started mimicking the characters’ voices—and the rest was history. To date, Matthew has almost 350K followers on TikTok. He has appeared on the Today Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, NBC’s New York Live TV, Good Day LA, Good Day NY, and WGN. In 2019, Matthew won Kenan Thompson’s Ultimate Comedy Experience at Carolines on Broadway. His professional experience includes hosting HQ Trivia, performing at corporate events, and doing stand-up comedy throughout the country. Matthew’s repertoire includes more than 250 impressions ranging from Rami Malek to Timothee Chalamet. His favorite to do right now is Jennifer Coolidge.

Matthew’s love of comedy and entertainment began when he was four years old after he discovered the Austin Powers DVD in his house. watched it so much that he began to mimic the characters’ gestures and words. “Do I make you randy?” echoed through his head every day. Matthew quickly found that he was able to make people laugh just by reproducing someone else’s persona. He spent countless hours in his room, scrolling through YouTube, digging up Johnny Carson, Don Rickles, Frank Sinatra, and Rich Little clips.

Dazzler of the Day: Ari Melber

A propensity for quoting rap and hip-hop songs and lyrics is not often found in mainstream news anchors, but Ari Melber is brilliantly bucking that trend on his ever-entertaining show ‘The Beat with Ari Melber’. In today’s political world, where the news is more depressing and dismal and hopeless with each passing day of non-indictments, Melber provides a healthy dose of humor along with intelligent and helpful analysis of political proceedings from a legal standpoint. He can loop an obscure deep-cut lyrical excerpt into a conversation on a deadly insurrection and somehow make it all work. Melber earns this Dazzler of the Day thanks largely to making political news something as necessary as it is entertaining. Check out his site here for all his current appearances.

Dazzler of the Day: Kevin Stea

If you were going to make a splash of an entry into pop culture, there was no better place to do so than in the firmament of stars conjured in Madonna’s 1991 documentary ‘Truth or Dare’. and appearing in her enduring dance classic ‘Vogue’. That is precisely where most of the world got to meet dancer and choreographer Kevin Stea, the Dazzler of the Day. Without offense to any of the other dancers featured in ‘Truth or Dare’, Kevin definitely came off as one of the sweetest ones, ready with a smile or laugh, and largely staying away from the occasionally catty drama. That core of professionalism paved the way for a remarkably lasting career in a realm where careers flare brilliantly but extremely briefly. Check out Stea’s website here to catch what he’s been up to all these years after working with Madonna.

Dazzler of the Day: Ritchie Torres

With a Twitter feed that’s absolutely on-fire of late (and not in an embarrassing Santos sort of way), Ritchie Torres is precisely the kind of fighter our country needs right now in the House of Representatives. Representing the South Bronx, Torres has been a champion for his constituents, and anyone else who has been dealing with inequity. Witness his long list of accomplishments at his official government site here. Thanks to his no-nonsense way of addressing the awfulness that is the current GOP, he earns this Dazzler of the Day

Dazzler of the Day: Padma Lakshmi

When winter sets in, and the holiday decor has been shelved for another year, my comfort zone moves int the kitchen, where cooking provides not only sustenance and good things for the belly, but the heat from the stove and oven are a balm against the outer chill. With that in mind, I’ve been embarking on a few recipes by Padma Lakshmi, and thanks to their brilliance she is being named Dazzler of the Day. But as they once said in ‘Reading Rainbow’, you don’t have to take my word for it. Check out her website here, where the following encapsulation of her noteworthy accomplishments are described:

Padma Lakshmi is an Emmy-nominated producer, television host, food expert, and a New York Times best-selling author.

She is the creator, host, and executive producer of the critically acclaimed Hulu series Taste the Nation, currently in production for its second season. Taste the Nation is the recipient of a 2021 Critics Choice Real TV Award for Best Culinary Series, a 2021 Gotham Award nomination for Breakthrough Series, and 2022 Critics Choice Real TV Award for Best Show Host. In June 2022, Taste the Nation: Holiday Edition won a James Beard Foundation Award in the Visual Media – Long Form category.

Lakshmi also serves as host and executive producer of Bravo’s two-time Emmy-winning series Top Chef, now in its 20th season. Top Chef has been nominated for 42 Emmys, including her four-time nomination as Outstanding Host for A Reality-Competition Program. In 2022, she accepted two Critics Choice Real TV Awards for Best Culinary Show and Best Competition Series on behalf of Top Chef as well as an award for Best Show Host.

In the fall of 2021, Padma released her first children’s book – The New York Times best-selling Tomatoes for Neela, as well as guest-edited The Best American Travel Writing 2021. Lakshmi is also the author of two cookbooks – Easy Exotic and Tangy, Tart, Hot & Sweet, The New York Times best-selling memoir Love, Loss and What We Ate, and The Encyclopedia of Spices & Herbs.

Dazzler of the Day: Giuliano D’Orazio

Hot on the heels of a self-titled debut solo album, Giuliano D’Orazio has actually been a mainstay on the Worcester, MA music scene for years. A self-described queer rock and roll artist, D’Orazio earns this crowning as Dazzler of the Day thanks to the ten glorious songs that collectively comprise the rollicking tour de force of ‘Giuliano’. I can’t remember the last time I was so moved and entranced by an entire album (my favorites include lead track ‘Boy Next Door’, ‘Holy Grail’, and the powerful ‘Don’t Pray for Me’, but every song here is worth repeat listens). Check out D’Orazio’s website here for more information and music.

Dazzler of the Day: Quentin Maxfield

Being in the middle of a cartoon threesome was, strangely enough, not on any of my bucket lists, but after gleefully discovering the artwork of Quentin Maxfield and being immortalized in one of his erotic scenes, it most certainly should have been. (This is also the closest I’ll get to becoming Jessica Rabbit, and I must take such thrills where I can get them.) The admittedly NSFW/18+only artwork is a glorious amalgamation of animation and real-life photographs, as Maxfield brilliantly combines the two in breathtaking fashion. Beginning with a photograph and wondrously weaving a sexy scenario around it in cartoon form, he creates a scene that elevates a real life pose into the realm of fantasy.

Maxfield’s work is a mash-up of erotic fusion and whimsy, grounded in a skillful rendering of light and shadows: his genius lies partly in his ability to match his additions to the photograph in lighting, tone, and texture, creating a seamless world where a real life image is augmented by animated figures in sexy, surreal style – a heightened landscape of erotic drama. Check out his Instagram and Twitter feeds for more NSFW artwork and scintillating evidence on why he has been named Dazzler of the Day. I can’t wait to see what he conjures next.

Dazzler of the Day: Casey Stratton

It was 19 years ago today that Casey Stratton released one of those albums that changed my life in the way that it conveyed exactly what I was thinking and feeling, even before I understood it all myself, in his pivotal work ‘Standing At The Edge’. Since then, I’ve been a fan of his music (he’s recorded 29 albums so far), and the way it has been his constant companion over the past two decades. In honor of this special anniversary, Stratton is crowned as Dazzler of the Day – for all the art he continues to create, and all the souls he has already touched through his work. Check out his website here for more music and beauty.

Dazzler of the Day: My Mom

This is probably my favorite Dazzler of the Day since my Dad was featured and my husband Andy was crowned a couple of years ago. This is my Mom, Laurie, who gets named as Dazzler for being, well, my Mom. While we extolled her more meaningful virtues in this earlier post, this one is all about her sense of style. Any talent I may have at putting together an outfit was created, cultivated and honed by my mother. She would set out a selection of three outfits for me to chose for school the next day, subtly teaching me how to put a wardrobe together – what matched and didn’t, what worked well together, and what sort of things would be best for accessories. My springboard into fashion was launched by regular perusing of her jewelry drawer, her scarf drawer, and the rows of shoes found in her closets. I would marvel at the way she could go from beleaguered housewife-in-a-flannel-nightgown and slippers to a Sunday stunner at church in the matter of an hour or so. “My mother taught me to be admired” as a wise woman once said, and that has proven true in more ways than I can mention. Today, on her birthday, we celebrate my Mom’s style – elegant and classic and timeless – and always dazzling.

Dazzler of the Day: Paul Mescal

He just joined Richard Linklater’s 20-year production of ‘Merrily We Roll Along’, and with that added bit of sparkle, Paul Mescal earns his first crowning as Dazzler of the Day. Having compiled an impressive roster of stage performances in his native Ireland, Mescal has been garnering critical praise for his dramatic work in films such as ‘The Lost Daughter’, ”Aftersun’ and ‘God’s Creatures’. And so he rolls merrily along…

Dazzler of the Day: Jeremy Pope

Could Jeremy Pope be a future member of the EGOT club? My money’s on yes, as he has been nabbing nominations right and left, including one for his recent Golden Globes win. Having been nominated for Emmy, Grammy and Tony Awards, he’s well on his way to EGOT status – an upcoming turn in the film version of ‘The Collaboration’ in which he plays Jean-Michel Basquiat. Today he can add Dazzler of the Day to that impressive resume.

Dazzler of the Day: Nathan Lee Graham

The Dazzler of the Day feature was tailor-made for artists and entertainers like Nathan Lee Graham, who can instantly seduce and render an audience rapt with wonder and adoration. Currently setting the path to hell alight in a stunning turn in ‘Hadestown’ (which we will finally get to see when it winds its way to Proctors in a couple of months) Graham brings an impressive history of show-stopping performances to whatever stage is lucky enough to host his talents, such as his turns in ‘Sweet Home Alabama’, both ‘Zoolander’ films, and ‘Hitch’, in addition to his stage work in ‘The Wild Party’ and ‘Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’.  Check out his website here

Dazzler of the Day: Cheryl L. Johnson

Without a Speaker for a week, the House of Representative had only one gavel-wielding person in charge of keeping some sort of order over all the clowns (and adults) in the room: the Honorable Cheryl L. Johnson, who mightily earns her first Dazzler of the Day thanks to grace under great pressure. Johnson was recently sworn in once again as the Clerk of the House of Representatives, and she will likely need that grace in the days to come.
