Dazzler of the Day: Chad Putman

Earlier this month, Chad Putman turned 48 years old and moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico in an effort to recharge and take advantage of a mid-life opportunity. I like that take on what others have traditionally dismissed as a mid-life crisis, and changing woe-is-me perspectives and feelings of powerlessness are two tenets of Putman’s latest endeavor. His website and mantra of Make Your It Happen is a treasure-trove of inspiration and aspiration, and Putman’s indefatigable spirit is gloriously infectious. That’s not to say he’s lost in the clouds and unaware of the reality of life – quite the opposite – he acknowledges and embraces those trying moments, turning them into lessons and signposts of when and how to change and evolve. He’s taken his years of experience and turned them into a hybrid that may have been his destiny all along, in the form of one triumphant triumvirate: Consultant, Coaching & Project Development. For all of that, Putman earns his first Dazzler of the Day crowning. Check out his website here, and follow the journey on his YouTube channel here

Dazzler of the Day: Alex Newell

Hot off their recent Tony Award for their performance in ‘Shucked’ (which actually looked, and more importantly sounded, like a gleeful musical romp) Alex Newell may now add Dazzler of the Day to an already-impressive resume. Their work includes a celebrated turn on ‘Glee’, but I was more astounded by their talent when I got to see them in the glorious revival of ‘Once On This Island’ a few years ago. Now I’ve added ‘Shucked’ to my wish list in the hopes of witnessing Newell on stage again.

Dazzler of the Day: Matt Rife

His ‘Problemattic World Tour‘ is all but sold-out for the next year, including four shows at nearby Proctor’s Theater (to which I’d hoped to score tickets but arrived a few hours too late) and he is easily one of the hottest comedians storming stages today. I caught on to his magic a long time ago, when his Tik Tok drops would send me to sleep laughing my ass off thanks to several viral audience interactions and his talented way of working a crowd into a riotous frenzy. The fact that he is easy on the eyes makes the whole package seem too good to be true, and Matt Rife earns this Dazzler of the Day for making us all laugh without resorting to crude or cheap shots, and piercing through to the heart inherent in the best humor.

Dazzler of the Day: Sara Bareilles

Sara Bareilles wrote one of the best pop songs of the new millennium in the form of ‘Brave’, but to limit her bottomless reservoir of talent to a pop tune is to miss an incredible body of work, such as her song-writing and musical theater genius (she wrote the score for ‘Waitress’ and later appeared in the titular role). More recently, she could be seen and heard treading the boards in the revival of ‘Into the Woods’. She earns this Dazzler of the Day for a career of Grammy, Olivier, Tony, Emmy, Drama Desk, Outer Circle Desk Award nominations and wins.

Dazzler of the Day: Andrew Christian

For gay men of a certain age (myself most definitely included), the best source of fashionable and racy underwear a couple of decades ago was the ‘International Male’ catalog; the modern-day version of such a supply has to be Andrew Christian, who has made his underwear company the gold-standard of fun under-attire. Having established himself as a brand thanks to skillful and sexy promotional images and videos, and an ever-evolving selection of merchandise that celebrates all sorts of sexiness, Christian walks the walk of his scantily-attired talk, thrilling on his Instagram feed with his own products. He earns this Dazzler of the Day for that, and for giving us something more than boxers or briefs from which to choose.

Dazzler of the Day: Aaron Henrikson

Taking a swashbuckling turn through sensational sartorial splendor, Aaron Henrikson first caught my eye when he was working with Madonna on her make-up. Since then, he’s made a name for himself in his own right thanks to an unending arsenal of stunning ensembles, and a wardrobe that sets a new standard for what it means to make a stunning impression. Thanks to that, he earns this Dazzler of the Day crowning.

Dazzler of the Day: Kylie Monogue

Just when I thought we might not have an unofficial Pride Anthem this year, Kylie Minogue comes along to snatch the Queen of the Gays title back from whomever had it last with her new bop ‘Padam Padam’ from her upcoming album ‘Tension’. For that alone she would earn this Dazzler of the Day, but Minogue has a long history of gay anthems in her pocket to back it all up further. I’m old enough to remember her first storming of the US charts with a remake of ‘Locomotion’ back in the 1980’s and since then she’s been a favorite of my community. Check out the new song and video below.

Dazzler of the Day: Cristiano Ronaldo

One of the greatest football (soccer) players in history, Cristiano Ronaldo has turned all that talent into a lucrative career of products and endorsements ranging from underwear to cologne (two of my favorite things), all of which can be seen on his website here. More powerful is the legacy of his athletic accomplishments, which is reason alone for this Dazzler of the Day

Ronaldo has been featured in numerous posts here previously, perhaps best encapsulated in this linkalicious post.

Dazzler of the Day: Erik Bottcher

“I sometimes think if I wasn’t born as a gay person in a rural area, if I wasn’t a survivor of suicide attempts, if I would be in the role that I’m in and I actually don’t think I would be, I think maybe I’d be… running my Dad’s fly fishing shop with two kids in the Adirondacks, but I think that going through these experiences is what drew me into a life of wanting to make a big difference while I’m on this planet and feeling the urgency… I’ve always felt an urgency to do a lot while I’m here and maybe just being a survivor of suicide, I always felt that life is going to go by very quickly and what am I going to do while I’m here and so I picked what I think is one of the best paths to make the biggest impact while we’re here. Because life goes by like that, it really does if you think about it, and no one ever says at a memorial service ‘He took the best vacations’ or ‘He had the best cars and the best clothes’ ~ No,  it’s ‘This is what he did, these are people he touched, these are the people he helped.'” ~ Erik Bottcher

New York City Council Member Erik Bottcher, of District 3, is one of those wonderful people who is so rarely seen in photos on his own that finding the ones here took several tries perusing an endless parade of people on Bottcher’s FaceBook feed – a testament to his authentic care and concern for his fellow citizens. The opening salvo of this post comes from Bottcher himself, and the refreshingly open and honest revelations of experiences that many of us have dealt with and never talked about is what sets him apart from his political cohorts. It also drives him to make a difference while he’s here, and there’s something noble and poignant of someone who can be so authentically and powerfully himself. It sends a badly-needed message to those of us who need to hear we are not alone, that there is a place for us in the world if we want to make one, that every single one of us matters. For that heroic mission, taken one step, one district, one election at a time, Bottcher earns this Dazzler of the Day

Dazzler of the Day: Bryan Batt

During the ‘Sunset Boulevard’ musical obsession that dominated my life in the mid 1990’s, one of the shows that I attended had the stalwart Alan Campbell (another Alan who spells his name correctly) out and his understudy in – and that was the night I became fully aware of Bryan Batt and his brilliance. He took the role of Joe Gillis and made it his own – not an easy feat given how accustomed many of us had become to Mr. Campbell. Batt matched the ferocious but fragile performance of his leading lady Betty Buckley to create an evening of musical theater magic.

A few years later, I was at a Sunday brunch in the South End of Boston and noticed Batt at a nearby table; to my regret and shame, I was too shy and socially anxious to approach him and offer my accolades on that ‘Sunset’ performance, so all these years later this is my small way of making up for that.

He’s carved out an impressive theatrical resume – highlights of which include the aforementioned ‘Sunset’ run, a scene-chomping turn in ‘Jeffrey’, a suave, smarmy, and poignantly nuanced role on ‘Mad Men‘ (a role which should have gone on for far longer than it did), and several other Broadway behemoths such as ‘Cats’, ‘Starlight Express’, ‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘The Scarlet Pimpernel‘, and ‘Saturday Night Fever’. A true Renaissance man who dabbles in all forms of beauty and art, Batt and his husband own a home furnishings and gift store, Hazelnut, that is on my bucket list to visit in New Orleans. He’s also written two books, ‘She Ain’t Heavy, She’s My Mother: A Memoir’ and ‘Big Easy Style’. Taken together, it’s more than an honor to name him as Dazzler of the Day

Dazzler of the Day: Halle Bailey

Today marks the opening of the much-anticipated and discussed live-action remake of Disney’s 1989 animated classic ‘The Little Mermaid’. Like every good gay boy of a certain age, I dutifully listened to the soundtrack inside and out during the years following its release, perfecting every number from the wondrously wistful ‘Part of Your World’ (and its hair-flipping reprise) to the sinister machinations of ‘Poor Unfortunate Souls’. Riding the crest of the new movie is Halle Bailey, whose voice soars as expected – Bailey earns this Dazzler of the Day for that alone, but she’s got a few Grammys in her pocket in case anyone needed reminding.

Dazzler of the Day: Justin Rose

Golf has gotten a bad fashion rap over the years, and not entirely unjustly. Recently, however, the game has gotten more sartorially impressive, and I’m not going to pretend I don’t have one or two golf shirts in my closet, especially for the summer months. My friend Skip swears by them as the most lightweight and comfortable shirts for the sweaty season, and now they’re getting some major backing by companies I’ve admired and respected for some time. Case in point is Bonobos, which has booked golfer Justin Rose to represent their line, and he’s doing so in fine fashion. I’ve loved Bonobos for many years, and their impeccable eye for taste and talent seems to have found the perfect ambassador.

Justin Rose earns this Dazzler of the Day for that smart pairing, as well as his success on the golf course – a career he’s advanced in since 1998. He was the #1 golfer in 2018, and in 2016 he earned an Olympic gold medal. A career that lasts decades long in any sport is a notable accomplishment – one that grows and evolves and becomes better over time is the stuff of true dazzlers.

Dazzler of the Day: Jose Llana

I’m old enough to have attended the first staging of ‘Here Lies Love’ – the fabulous imagining of an Imelda Marcos musical that is everything you expect such a thing to be and quite a bit more – and seeing that it is returning in even more magnificent form (a proper Broadway theater reconfigured for the immersive magic that formed such a key component of this show) makes me giddy and ready to return to New York. Resuming the role of Ferdinand Marcos is Jose Llana, whose initial take on that polarizing figure was as captivating as it needed to be to showcase how he could attain such popularity and power. Llana earns this Dazzler of the Day for capturing such lightning twice.

Dazzler of the Day: Arielle Jacobs

It takes a formidable performer to step into the many shoes of Imelda Marcos, and in the new staging of ‘Here Lies Love’ Arielle Jacobs is hellbent on proving that she has the vocal chops and emotional fortitude to transform into the former First Lady of the Philippines. Based on her previous performances in such demanding material as ‘In the Heights’, Jacobs seems a shoo-in for a fabulous showing, and I can’t wait to get tickets for this all-Filipino version of that wondrous show. Jacobs earns this Dazzler of the Day for all of her stage work, including appearances in such classics as ‘Into the Woods’, ‘Wicked’, and ‘Aladdin’. More magic is surely on the way with ‘Here Lies Love’.
