Chartreuse Chic Start

Starting before anyone is quite ready, but not at all unwelcome, these are the first unfurling leaves of the fig trees I’ve overwintered in the garage. What a happy sight to see their buds swell and burst, and now the bright unfolding of the foliage. I don’t bother to get too attached – these first leaves tend to be killed off by late freezes and the shock of the sun after an unlit garage – but behind them will be the leaves and fruit that will see us through the summer to come.

Last year we had quite the fig harvest – starting in mid-summer and going into the fall. Hopefully this year will allow us to reap similar riches. If not, these handsome leaves and the enchanting form of their branches will have to suffice. Beauty will be enough. Sustenance would be a bonus.

Fuzzy Dangerous

Do not be fooled by its cute fuzzy garb, or its seasonally appropriate appearance – the rabbit is one of the garden’s most destructive enemies. My own Easter bunny trauma aside, I happen to adore these woodland creatures, so I put up with a certain degree of destruction – such as chewed up bamboo plants or foot-high bark peeling of the dogwood trees. In fact, something ate the ever green boughs underneath which this puffball sits. Strange that it wouldn’t think not to harm the source of shelter, but they’re no different from any other creature whose main instinct is survival – reason and planning for the future fall by the wayside when the task at hand is merely surviving a winter of starvation. For that reason, my heart softens a bit, and forgives the loss of some bamboo and fir boughs. At this point in our gardens, nothing is so precious that it can’t be a gift to a hungry rabbit.

This particular character is a happy sign of life returning to the outside world. Robins and blue jays and cardinals have already been chirping and flying to and fro in the front yard, while the squirrels have been making their usual ruckus in the backyard. Spring breathes new life into our surroundings. The world stirs, the land twitches, and the ice melts. The journey begins…

Dash of Spring Color

Pinks and reds and purples, oh my! I have no more words to accompany this post, and luckily the prettiness begs for silent appreciation.

Dazzler of the Day: Eugene Lee Yang

His previous appearance as Hunk of the Day merely set the stage for this breathtaking turn as Dazzler of the Day. Eugene Lee Yang has been dazzling audiences from behind and in front of the camera, starting with his work as one of The Try Guys. In what is often considered his most masterful work to date, his ‘I’m Gay’ video is a theatrical work of thrilling, powerful genius. Through image and movement and costume, wholly devoid of words, it tells a provocative and evocative story of coming out, of being brave, of being unreservedly who you are in a world that constantly hounds you to be someone else. That’s how you become a true dazzler.

Summer Sweet Treat

Summer is only a gleam in the mind right now, but I’m sustaining on that gleam, and planning accordingly. If there’s one thing that this pandemic has taken and wrecked, it’s the idea of planning – which was one of my favorite pastimes – and I’m slowly trying to bring that back in small ways. The making of this recipe will be one such practice endeavor. Suzie made a batch and the recipe turned out to be surprising simple. Anything with vanilla wafers seems to be a good thing

The recipe says there is the possibility of using bottled Key lime juice – and honestly I hope that’s the case because the Key limes I’ve seen are tiny. It looks impossibly difficult to extract 3/4 cup juice from them, and I don’t have that kind of patience. Suzie actually used a combination of the more common Persian limes and a lemon, and it tasted wonderful, but I’d like to try the authentic Key limes for my first attempt. And for summer.

Dazzlers of the Day: Pete and Chasten Buttigieg

There was something galvanizing and breathtaking about seeing Pete Buttigieg soon in as Secretary of Transportation while his husband stood beside him, and then to see them kiss and embrace at various moments of public life. That’s something those of us of a certain age never got to see as young kids growing up, and what a wonderful thing it is to see today. It seems like such a little thing, but the power and immensity of having that out there cannot be overstated. I wish I had seen it way back when… and I’m thrilled to see it now. For that reason alone, Pete and Chasten Buttigieg earn their first joint Dazzlers of the Day honor. Secretary Buttigieg has already been a Hunk of the Day here, as has Chasten Buttigieg here. Today, they share the spotlight.

March Mocktail With a Healthy Twist

A bitter orange Italian soda gives the thrust to this March mocktail, which consists of that and the juice of a single fresh orange. I figure if I’m going to indulge in some soda, I might as well add some Vitamin C to it. I’ve been trying to add more liquids to my daily diet in an effort to get a little healthier, and to bone up for my first COVID vaccine this week.

That liquid plan comes on the heels of reading some information that the average adult should have about 100 ounces of water per day, which translates to ten tall glasses. Fortunately, I’m a big water drinker anyway, but this is still about four or five more than I usually have – which is a lot at first, and the bathroom must be nearby if you’re going to try this. Even errands can be dangerous. I’ve only been at it for a few days now, but I’ve noticed a bit more energy. That could be due to the extra sun and warmth though – spring adds it to my step.

Henry Cavill: The Heat Is On

When the temperature is on the rise, how much of it is due to these new stills of a shirtless Henry Cavill? It’s even better than that time he assembled some computer apparatus while wearing a vest. That was fun! These pics are from the recently-revamped superhero movie he crossed franchises with, and I think it was only available by streaming so I’ve not seen it yet (I haven’t streamed much because I honestly can’t be bothered with that). Mr. Cavill certainly knows how to change one’s mind.

He’s been here numerous times before in various state of undress, and that’s already been encapsulated in a post like this which gathers some of his links like that magic lasso. Click it and reverse it.

Hidden Paintings

Maybe I’d never noticed it before because I’d never seen a pinecone in just the right light. Or maybe I’ve just never been as observant as I thought I was. Whatever the case, and however the negligence occurred, my sheer delight in finding the painted striations on the inner structure of this pinecone has been unparalleled of late, when outside delights have been few and few between. On this sunny afternoon, when I took a stroll around the yard to see if anything had the courage to peep through the floor (a couple of daffodils on the south-facing wall were all I could find) it was a pinecone dropped from above that caught my eye and interest.

I’ve noticed pinecones before – and appreciated them for their architecture and form, the way nature sets some swirls into works of art that stick out from their surroundings through their radial perfection. And I’ve examined many pinecones up close, but this is the first I recall seeing such patterns within, and it’s one of those neat observations that, at the ripe age of 45, feels fresh and new and filled with wonder – the perfect embodiment of a proper spring start.

Dazzler of the Day: Jonathan Capehart

Jonathan Capehart checks all the boxes of what makes a Dazzler of the Day: he’s intelligent, dapper, erudite, compelling, fashionable, and engaging. With his new high-profile endeavor ‘The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart’ he is finally getting the exposure he deserves, and MSNBC is adding some grace and dignity to its Sunday offerings. Fun fact: he and his husband were married by Eric Holder, former U.S. Attorney General. He also has the most celebrated and beautifully-curated bookshelves in the world.  ‘The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart’ airs on MSNBC on Sundays at 10 AM

A Confused Cactus Highlights A Recap

We haven’t even reached Palm Sunday yet and already this Easter cactus is blooming. It may actually be a Thanksgiving cactus, or a Christmas cactus – and some years it’s showed off early and made itself a Halloween cactus. Whatever the case, at lease the sun is moving gin the right direction and duration, with more light, more heat, more joy to be held in each passing day. On with the recap, which includes the last days of this wretched winter.

The week began in somber fashion, as it marked the 30th anniversary of the day we lost Suzie’s Dad

Savannah sweetness and spice

Blues in my shower.

Witch’s spring finery.

Our new reality turned one (and probably smashed the fucking cake).

Spring fragrance options are in the air.

Hatching hope.

The arrival of spring

Spring, but slowly.

Naked vulnerability.

Soul spring Sunday.

Dazzlers of the Day includes Tom Bertram, Stacey Abrams, Cyrus McQueen, Marcus Lemonis, Soledad O’Brien,  Brian Sims, and Kevin Bruce.

Spring Soul Sunday

Once upon a time, not so log ago, I’d intended for this time slot to be the space for a more spiritual and soul-sustaining sort of post. It fell by the wayside because, quite frankly, I forgot about it, and those spiritual posts have been peppered throughout the blog, so I’ve been sustaining it that way. Now I find myself on a Sunday afternoon at the very start of spring, when the sun is warming the earth, and the feeling of hope and of possibility is making me both giddy and contemplative. That’s actually one of my happiest states, so I’m going to take this state and enjoy it for a bit.

Earlier in the day I did a minuscule amount of cleaning in the attic – and I mean minuscule: I moved two storage bins from the finished portion to the unfinished portion and called it a day. In that little effort however, I discovered that the unfinished part of the attic – which is not insulated and rather open to the outside elements – was retaining and multiplying the heat of the sun, like it does in summer. That definitely contributed to my happy countenance, and put a little spring into my step. So much so that I did a little more work up there (I found a single coat for donation!)

This is more a physical spring-cleaning post than a spiritual maintenance post, but one begets the other, especially when a Virgo is involved. Only when my surroundings are in order can my mind find any hope of following. Happy Spring Sunday!!

Dazzler of the Day: Kevin Bruce

Now that spring has officially sprung, it’s just a matter of time before the seasonal flower-fest starts appearing on Kevin Bruce’s FaceBook page – and it’s one of the happier FaceBook pages thanks to Kevin’s indomitable spirit of positivity – something that transcends the boundaries of online limits. So irrepressible is his energy, I can hear his loud glorious peals of laughter now, though I haven’t had the pleasure of seeing him in person for far too long. With this post, he is named Dazzler of the Day thanks to that wonderful personality that comes armed with equal doses of talent and entertainment (see some of his enchanting work below). I won’t reiterate the accolades you can find at his original Hunk of the Day feature, but it bears repeating that Kevin is one of my favorite people in the world, and when the world goes dim, he maintains his inner-light, spreading it to the rest of us. That’s what a true Dazzler does.
